Traffic flowing over the Basiliere Bridge has been slow lately after the state installed barriers and orange barrels along the center lanes of about half the bridge. Drivers heading into town from Bradford say they have to wait a lot longer than usual to get to the Haverhill side. It appears that MassDOT is working on replacing a steel support beam on the Bradford side of the bridge before the entire bridge is replaced in 2024.
Mayor James Fiorentini addressed Haverhill High School's Class of 2023 for his last time as mayor during commencement exercises on Saturday, June 3. It was noted that this class has only known Fiorentini as the city's mayor ever since it was in kindergarten. Fiorentini has been mayor for the last 20 years and is retiring at the end of this year after 10 straight two-year terms leading the city.
A new business selling credit card services and supplies is opening in the former Rent-A-Center location on downtown Merrimack Street, next to The Haverhill Heights high rise building. The Lamplighter is happy to see a vacant storefront being reused.
Boland Paint on South Main Street in Bradford was big in Haverhill in the 1960s and 1970s, then sold out to White Street Paint. The owners of Boland's had moved to Newburyport, at 201 Merrimack St., not far from Park Lunch. They recently sold to Johnson Paint but are still living in their apartment upstairs from the shop. When Boland was in operation, you could hire painters and wallpaper hangers and also purchase paint and wallpaper supplies.
The city has lots of pizza shops, including Beach Pizza near Washington Square that sells squares known as "beach pizza," which is a crispy Sicilian style pizza with sweet sauce and a modest amount of cheese unless you order extra.
Just over the border at the new Shelley's Kitchen in Plaistow you’ll find square Sicilian style pizza that's very puffy. You can order sweet and regular sauce, as well as other sauce options and toppings. Shelly's also has cold and hot subs, panini, soups, salads, wings, and more.
